British State Cover Up

British State Cover Up

It looks like former Omagh Bomb top cop Norman Baxter will get an opportunity to repeat his claims that the Government interfered with police investigations to let members of the Provisional IRA return over the border and live without fear of arrest from the police over their terrorist past.

Tyrone republican Gerry McGeough told the Sunday Tribune 47 of the 216 fugitives were told they could return.

Mr McGeough, who is to stand trial for IRA membership and attempted murder of a UDR man in 1981, said his lawyers uncovered the information.

MI5 agent ‘forced to give evidence’

By Barry McCaffrey26/06/09.

A MI5 agent will be arrested and forced to appear in court if he refuses to give evidence at the trial of two Co Armagh men accused of Real IRA weapons-smuggling, Belfast Magistrates Court heard yesterday.Lurgan men Desmond Kearns (44) and Paul Anthony McCaugherty (43) are due to go on trial later this year in connection with an alleged plot to ship arms to the north from mainland Europe between May 2005 and June 2006.They were arrested after a three-year MI5 ‘sting’ involving two undercover agents codenamed ‘Amir’ and ‘Ali’.The court was told that Amir had been employed by security services to befriend Mr Kearns and his wife Alison during trips to Europe to buy cigarettes in 2004. During the next three years he met the couple in various locations across Europe. The prosecution claims Mr Kearns, of Tannaghmore Green, and Mr McCaugherty of Beech Court, both in Lurgan, later attempted to use Amir and Ali to buy arms behalf of the Real IRA.Both men were arrested in June 2006 and charged with attempting to purchase weapons and explosives. But a prosecution lawyer said yesterday that Amir now refuses to give evidence and says MI5 betrayed him.In a highly unusual move, barrister David McDowell told the court MI5 now accepted it had misled its agent when it gave assurances that he would never have to appear at trial.Amir claims he was first asked by his MI5 bosses in 2005 if he would give evidence against the two suspects. He says he made it “absolutely clear” he did not want to do so.“In May 2005 I was assured that I would not have to give evidence by members of the security services and I was further assured that if the investigation progressed I would be removed from my role and replaced by another player,” he said in a statement submitted to the trial. In a bizarre account, the MI5 agent claimed he was encouraged to introduce the Kearns to a ‘weapons expert’ as part of a leaving present for a senior member of the security services.District Judge Eamon King said the prosecution had insisted Amir would be compelled to give evidence despite his obvious objections and had “told the court they can issue a summons to arrest him and bring him to the trial”.

Chief Superintendent Chris Thomson - Northumbria Police Cover Up the IRA attempted murder of British Agent Martin McGartland

Almost 11 years on and Chief Superintendent Chris Thomson, Northumbria Police the CPS and Mi5 continue to cover up. They have never charged anyone for the attempted murder of Martin McGartland.

In 2007, http://www.northumbria.police.uk/news_and_events/media_centre/news_releases/details.asp?id=7135 , Supt Thomson said: "I feel very honoured to have been asked to lead the force's Crime Department, which employs so many dedicated and professional people. I'm determined to continue to work with the area commands to deliver a quality service to the public, reducing crime, supporting witnesses and obtaining justice for victims." What Poppycock! Martin McGartland has never had any 'justice' or any support from Chris Thomson nor Northumbria Police. Martin Said; "Northumbria Police and its YES men (including Mr Thomson) are involved in a cover up when dealing with my attempted murder, by the PIRA, case. Moreover, Mr Thomson, the man who stated that; 'I'm determined to continue to work with the area commands to deliver a quality service to the public, reducing crime, supporting witnesses and obtaining justice for victims.' knows who was involved with my attempted murder, he knows where to find them and yet he, Northumbria Police continue to protect IRA members and contine with the cover up. Chief Superintendent Chris Thomson, Northumbria Police, Mi5 and the CPS continue to cover up IRA involvment in the 1999 shooting."

Read The Real and true story of how Mi5, Northumbria Police almost cost Martin His Life.

=========================================================================================================================
For more than four years, Martin McGartland lived the astonishing double life of a secret agent. To the IRA, he was a trusted Intelligence Office and an integral member of an active service unit. To the British Government however, he was known only as 'Agent Carol'. Martin McGartland is credited by British Intelligence with saving the lives of at least fifty people. Every time he tipped off the authorities, he risked detection and yet, heroically and fearlessly, he continued to pass on life-saving information. Finally, his cover was blown. Martin was taken from Sinn Fein headquarters in Belfast to an IRA safehouse for questioning and almost certain execution. Though guarded by armed men, in a desperate bid for freedom, he dived from a third floor window. Northumbria Police, CPS and Mi5 exposed Martins true identity when they took a flawed case against him in 1997. In 1999 the IRA tracked Martin down, as result of Northumbria Police, Mi5 and CPS flawed cort case, and shot Martin 6 times. To this day, 11 years later, Northumbria Police, CPS and Mi5 continue to cover up IRA involvment in Martin's attempted murder. Martin says; "Northumbria Police could, if they wanted to, arrested those in the IRA who tried to kill me in June 1999. Northumbria Police know who they are and they know where to find them. Northumbria Police also continue to cover up the shooting case including, the guns, answer phone message, properties used by IRA, CCTV, mobile phones, Car and van used, DNA etc. Northumbria Police, Mi5 and CPS are protecting IRA members and they continue to do so."

A frighteningly accurate and grippng read, 30 Oct 2000

This review is from: Fifty Dead Men Walking (Paperback)

Having served two tours of Northern Ireland with the British Army myself, I picked this book up thinking that it would another meandering and inaccurate tale of life in the Province. To my surprise I found it one of the most true to life and frightening recounts of life on the streets in Northern Ireland. An outstanding read.

This review is from: Fifty Dead Men Walking (Paperback)
the book is the story of a youhg man recruited then ultimately betrayed by the security services in the battle against the IRA.The book is impossible to put down and the courage and motives of the author are so laudable,he is an example to us all-however his ultimate betrayal by the security services shows what little value was placed on his life by them.A thoroughly good read.

Martin McGartland's heroic account of a double life within the ranks of the IRA's intelligence wing and Special Branch. A man who, due to his accurate intelligence, saved the lifes of at least 50 men. Without doubt, this is the most compelling biography I have read.

ira informer reveals day to day operations, 20 Aug 2005
By ade "leopardman6969" (staffordshire)
This review is from: Fifty Dead Men Walking (Paperback)
Martin McGartland was recruited by RUC Special Branch in 1987 and only just escaped with his life in 1991.
This is an excellent book for those readers interested in day to day operations of the IRA and how an informer works in his dangerous occupation. One slip up and you end up with a bullet in the back of your head. Many IRA personnel are named, his work in the IRA's Belfast Intelligence unit as well as a separate active service unit is given, chapter 10 gives details on how the quartermaster department works, how they collected intelligence on potential targets,as well as their various money making schemes to raise finance.
Finally an operation he informed on was foiled, leading the IRA's internal security to suspect him,he was "interrogated" but managed to escape. Recommended, not just history,it provides a real feel for daily life in the IRA.

This book was one of the only book I have read to date that has given a real insight to the difficulties that the ordinary people of Belfast encounter during the trouble of Northern Ireland. I live in the south of Ireland of similiar age to Martin McGarland but had no idea until reading this book how life was the ordinary people of Belfast. Would give this book a five star and I rarely give that...

Solid book that reads very well. You really become involved with the story and I found it hard to put the book down. I read an interview with the guy recently and just struck me as a survivor. Nothing was going to stop him. However, he seemed to have a taste for danger and excitement that bordered on the reckless...which I suppose was an important quality if you were going to be a mole in the IRA.

FANTASTIC READ. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - if you read one book this year read this one!

I finished this book in two days, I just couldn't put it down- you will be on the edge of your seat waiting to see if Marty is discovered by the IRA as an informer for the Special Branch.

This books gives a real insight into the hierachy of the IRA and how it operated clearly pointing the finger of violence at Martin McGuiness and Gerry Adams.

Marty was a very brave man to risk his life to save many british soldiers and innocent civilians although he now has to pay the price by living a secret life away from his family and continually on the move to protect his identity.

The book is far better than the film which is out at cinemas at the moment but nevertheless worth a watch.

By donnie "keane" (england) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fifty Dead Men Walking (Paperback)
A very thought-provoking read where i wasn't sure what to tink in certain parts because i think he was either mad or just had balls of steel!!! Whatever the case, the book highlights the 'stuff' that went on that us civilians never hear about on the news. This is why I suppose certain people decide to write these books about what happenened ( there are a many out there now) but there are hardly any that report the opposite opinion i.e. the loyalists who carried out similar attacks. The book, however, is a brilliant read which has given me an insight into what I didn't know before and even though I feel sorry for Martin , I think he knows it was his decision to do it. The part of the whole situation seems a bit one-sided as he fails to mention that the groups on the 'other side' were also carrying out similar atacks against Catholics, and he never wrote about those atrocities.
A great book never the less.

I enjoyed the book and found it difficult to put down. The only complaint that I have is that it was a little to brief in parts and did not go into enough detail. This was particular evident when he author describes how he was inducted by Special Branch. Made me feel that perhaps all was not revealed. Still a very good book by a very brave man.

It is a good tale and no doubt a lot of it is true but for a story about such a terrifying time in recent history it is too easy to read.
It reads like a magazine short story and just sketches over certain items/events that probably deserve to be treat a bit more seriously. Still enjoyed the book and was a nice book to sit next to the pool in Menorca with.

This review is from: Fifty Dead Men Walking (Paperback)
I find it hard to believe many of the statements in this work of fiction. I have followed Mr McGartlands story in the papers and I have found many contradictions both from one article to another and in this book. I know it sounds credable but I was brought up just around the corner from McGartland in the Clonard and I have an brother in the RUC. Everyone on both sides of the community find his questionable account intertaining to say the least!

This is the quickest book I have ever read, not because it is short but because I couldnt put it down. The book explains how martin mcgarland was recruited by Special Branch and how his status rose within the IRA which ultimately allowed him to mix with the higher ranks of the IRA. This book gives a good insight into the IRA network and how they operate. It also details the punishement squads of the IRA and how they abused the local people of Northern Ireland. The writing style is very easy to read and martin doesnt glorify the bravery that he went through to save the lives of innocent people from the scum that call themselves the IRA...

Northumbria Police - Mi5 Cover Up Continues 10 Years

New appeal ten years on from Martin McGartland attempted murder
Premium Article !

17 June 2009

By DAVID SEDGWICK

A RENEWED appeal is being made into the attempted murder of Martin McGartland, ten years after the attack.
Mr McGartland was shot as he sat in his car in Duchess Street, Whitley Bay on June 17, 1999.

He survived, despite being shot a number of times at close range.

No one has ever been charged with the attempted murder and, ten years on, officers at Northumbria Police are continuing with the extensive investigation.

In the past, detectives have not confirmed a motive for the shooting.

Early reporting at the time indicated a possibility that Mr McGartland had been shot by local criminals, but there was no evidence to support it.

Det Chief Supt Chris Thomson, who is leading the investigation, said: "Although this was an unsuccessful attack, it was a cold-blooded, calculated assassination attempt.

"Mr McGartland has asked that Northumbria Police clarify the situation as far as we can and I am happy to do so.

"Mr McGartland's history as an agent for the then Royal Ulster Constabulary and his supplying of information about the Provisional IRA is a matter of public knowledge, documented in his own books on the subject.

"Our main line of enquiry, therefore, continues to be that Mr McGartland may have been shot by a person or people with Irish Republic sympathies, for reasons closely linked to his former life in Northern Ireland."

During the ten years of the investigation:

*

* five people have been arrested, though no one has yet been charged;

* 1,004 witness statements taken;

* 1,122 house-to-house enquiries have been carried out;

* 2,764 exhibits have been collated;

* 5,043 documents have been assembled.

Detectives are continuing to use DNA recovered from the scene to eliminate people from the investigation.

Other lines of enquiry centre around a van abandoned at the scene which had been bought only two days before the attack, and a message left on a telephone answering machine a few days earlier, asking about a van for sale.

The caller had a Scottish accent, originating from somewhere in the Glasgow region.

Two semi-automatic pistols and some ammunition were found in the Gateshead area within months of the attack.

One of the guns was forensically linked to the shooting and police believe those responsible may have stayed in the Gateshead area in the run up to, and after, the attack.

Mr Thomson added: "Ten years is a long time for people to keep a secret about something like this.

"Over time, word can leak out and be talked about.

"Also, people's loyalties can change a lot in ten years, and people may now be prepared to help us.

"Anyone who may have information can contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043043 ext 69162 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."

Northumbria Police State Cover up

Northumbria Police, more than 10 years one, continue to cover-up the 1999 IRA shooting of Martin McGartland. The CPS nor Northumbria Police will take action against those involved. McGartland said; "Northumbria Police know who shot me, know where to find them, however, they and the CPS are failing to do anything." Northumbria Police will not carry-out proper reviews of the 1999 shooting case, won't make further public appeals. Martin also said; "The police have refused to give me a copy of my own signed witness statement." Martin also has concerns about the DNA which was recovered in his case, he said; " Northumbria Police are refusing to deal with the DNA correctly. The Police did not even add the DNA to the datebase until 8 or 9 years after the shooting. The Police, in an email to Martin, clailmed that this was because; "it was not good enough" Martin said; "He does not accept this. The Police have been involved in a cover-up for almost 11 years."

Cops broaden hunt for IRA hit team on McGartland

Sunday World, 16th May 2010

By JOHN CASSIDY

THE hunt for the IRA gang who tried to kill Special Branch spy Marty McGartland has gone international.
Detectives in Northumbria Police are now said to be looking for suspects who may
be living in the Republic, Europe or America.

As the 11th anniversary approaches on the attempted to kill 'Agent Carol', those close to
McGartland hope a breakthrough lies in enhanced DNA evidence now in the hands of
Northumbria Police. Five suspects have been arrested and questioned about the June 1999 attack in
Whitley Bay.

McGartland, then aged 29, was shot six times by a lone gunman but miraculously
survived. Two of those arrested were convicted bombers Henry
'Harry' Fitzsimmons and Scots-born Gary Scott Monaghan.

They were released on bail on November 4, 1999 and had their bail cancelled in January 2000 because
there was not enough evidence to charge them. Three others were also arrested but no charges were
made.

A spokesman for McGartland said he hoped police would make a further appeal for information
next month on the 11th anniversary of his murder bid. “The senior investigating
officer in charge of the case, Detective Chief Superintendent Chris Thomson, has been in contact
with Martin recently about the progress in the case,” said a spokesman.

”He says they are looking to obtain whatever evidence they can and that they have extended their search
internationally for the person who tried to kill him. “He confirmed that the DNA
recovered from the scene has been loaded onto the national DNA database and
his review had improved the quality of the sample

The Police, Northumbria Police, have a duty to vigorously investigate Martin's attemped murder, as with all crimes, and to prosecute those who are found to be involved, connected to his 1999 shooting. However, it's Martin's view that Northumbria Police, Mi5, others within the higher echelons of the British State, whom Marty give hes all, have sought to cover up such IRA actions to protect IRA members, it's a total outrage.
